Singer Stage School
Singer Stage School was launched in November 2001, following a “sold-out” summer school in 2000. In January 2007 ‘Singer Stage School’ which is based in Leigh on Sea, in Essex became a part-time (semi vocational) training school. The school operates Tuesday & Wednesday early evening till late and all day Saturday. We are one of the leading and most respected training establishments in the UK. Our client list says it all – so you don’t have to take our word for it! We take our training very seriously.
Our students have won awards through performances including a BAFTA won by Bobby Lockwood. Best Dramatic Scene in British Soap Awards 2009, and Best Charity Commercial in the U.K. for N.S.P.C.C. and many more. We are always being asked to supply artistes for very emotive issues.
The school trains students from age 4 to 21 years of age, (subject to audition from age 6). Our training is structured with the view of ‘Performing Arts’ being a possible career choice for the student. Examination classes for Dance and Drama are also supplied at the school. The company is run under the personal supervision of Sandra who attends weekly. Who makes sure that her tutors and staff (CRB checked and First Aid trained) are some of the very best working professionals in the industry. Take a look at our Guest Tutors too – quite a guest list. We take ’emotional support’ very seriously too. The school has also benefited from healthy eating workshops and food sampling. Sandra likes to know all her students well, so she knows first hand about the strengths and capabilities of the individual student for when she submits them for casting breakdowns. We also like to make sure that students are keep grounded and natural throughout the process. The performing arts training is run alongside the students attending local academic schools. To enable them to maintain the highest level of academic training available to them, which is very important especially in later life. We prefer and encourage students to continue with exam work and leave academic school at 18 years of age with great qualifications. The school often has casting directors attend classes to workshop students. We are delighted to have worked on some of the most fantastic projects for Young Performers over the years.

Each week we have a different guest choreographer/dancer to teach dance. So almost every style is covered focusing mainly on Commercial/Street Dance. We have previously covered Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Dance Hall, Waacking, Jazz, Locking, Commercial, House, Break dance and Lyrical/Contemporary. We have Musical Theatre Artistes teach from top shows such as: Hamilton, Thriller, Legally Blonde, Shrek, Grease, The Commitments, Rock of Ages, Footloose, Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Sister Act, Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang, Les Miserables, The Band, Jersey Boys, Fame, Hairspray, Chicago, West Side Story, Tap Dogs, Stomp, Swan Lake (Matthew Bourne), Matilda and lots more. We have 2 vocal coaches at the school alongside some special guests and master classes for Singing. The main genre covered is Musical Theatre but we also cover Pop, Audition preparation for West End shows/College auditions and Harmony Work.
Several technical dance styles are based on Ballet therefore it is hugely important for any children looking to work in Musical Theatre and any students wanting to move on to performing arts colleges to study Musical Theatre, Commercial/Street or Contemporary Dance. Ballet is great for posture, co-ordination, musicality, strength, flexibility and balance. It can really benefit children not only within dance but sports such as gymnastics and football. We supply I.S.T.D. Ballet training at the school. Starting with Primary Ballet right up to Major exam grades ready for your teaching exams should you wish to take them once you graduate from the school. We recommend that children start ballet at approx 3 and a half at the earliest. Before that time it is far more difficult for young children to concentrate for the whole length of the class. You can start ballet at any age above 3.5 years at the school and will join a suitable class for your level and capability (older students starting ballet will not be put in grades with much younger children so will need to work hard to keep up with a more advanced class). We have lots of boys taking ballet class at the school too to help their other styles of dance or sports.
Jazz will focus strongly on technique working on turns/pirouettes, leaps kicks and jumps. The class will also include routines of different styles including lyrical and musical theatre. This class is essential for students wanting a career in Musical Theatre or Commercial/Contemporary dance.
Tap is great skill to have for all dancers. It is the most effective style to help rhythm and musicality and is needed for Musical Theatre and sometimes commercial dance. Our classes are not based on an exam syllabus so we can get through the work quicker and make sure they are fully prepared for any Performing Arts college.
Commercial is a class for students to work on style, musicality, dynamics, performance and picking up choreography. Classes will cover dancing in heels too, for girls to prepare for commercial auditions when they attend college and graduate from us. As choreography will be more mature we recommend students are at least 12 years to attend (the class is mainly aimed at 15+ year olds).
Acrobatics teaches flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline & concentration. This class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique. Students will learn such things as handstands, cartwheels, bridges, walkovers, balance & contortion tricks progressing to more advanced tumbling including Aerials (no handed cartwheels) and back handsprings. This class is great for students looking to enhance their agility, flexibility, & strength. Working on flexibility and strength in Acro will help all other areas of dance, particularly Ballet and Jazz. Acro is an advantage for freestyle dance within auditions and classes. Classes are based on the Acrobatic Arts syllabus. Unlike gymnastics, Acrobatic dance is designed to be performed within dance choreography and on regular flooring/stages rather than on mats/sprung floor.
We offer LAMDA drama exams with our highly experienced LAMDA coaches. These one on one lessons are great to work on confidence, diction, accents and memorizing and understanding monologues/scripts. There are several options when choosing LAMDA grades, we have chosen to work on LAMDA ACTING exams rather than Verse and Prose which children have often worked on at their academic schools. We have received great results for all our LAMDA students. These exams (when taken at a high level) also count towards UCAS points for University and can be equivalent of an A level. The exams can also lead to becoming a LAMDA teacher.
Additional Coaching Classes
Audition + Drama Coaching
(Screen Acting) We offer one to one coaching for 30 mins to prepare for an important audition or just work on your screen acting skills, which would include cold reading, character interpretation, etc. So you feel prepared for your next casting. Some students alternate between this class and LAMDA.
Received Pronounciation / Voice Coaching
We also offer one to one coaching to improve students’ speaking voice and encourage better diction. Students are able to work on a well-spoken English (RP) accent, which is often required for castings. This is also very beneficial for any students with minor speech impediments – lisps etc.
Private singing lessons are available with our 2 main vocal coaches subject to availability. Priority is given to students preparing audition songs for college auditions or who are preparing for a Musical Theatre casting. Lessons are available to other students wanting to improve their singing depending on availability. Students also have the option to take Associated Board exams.
